Home Theatre Design Ideas

A home theatre room is a dedicated room in your home that has been purpose-designed for big-screen entertainment. Whether it's watching the latest blockbuster, bingeing your favourite TV show, or even getting a few mates around to watch the big game, it should feel like your own private cinema and be a place to relax, unwind and spend some quality time together.

When it comes to creating the perfect home theatre, there are a few key elements to consider, including furniture, lighting, and tech, to name a few. Like anything, the space can be as basic or luxurious as you like and there are endless theatre room design ideas waiting to be explored.

At Dennis Family Homes, many of our home designs include a dedicated home theatre room within the floorplan. But don’t worry if your chosen home design doesn’t have one, as you could always convert a games room, living room or even a spare bedroom into a fantastic theatre space with a few simple updates!

There is so much to consider when it comes to theatre room design ideas around layout and furniture within the space. If you are planning a dedicated home theatre room, then at the very least, you will want to include comfortable chairs and a small table or two to put drinks and snacks on. Tiered seating is a real luxury and is certainly achievable in a dedicated theatre space, however it comes with a cost. If you are happy to keep it basic, any comfortable seat facing the screen (that doesn’t obstruct anybody else’s view) will work perfectly too – as long as everyone can reach the popcorn!

Perhaps the most important part of any home theatre is the tech you choose to incorporate. Your home theatre can be as high tech and expensive as you want it to be, but it doesn’t need to break the bank. Essentially, you will need a big screen TV or a projector with a drop-down screen, plus speakers to really enhance your viewing experience.

If you are planning a dedicated home theatre room and good AV is important to you, then you might want to consider theatre room design ideas such as sound-proofing the room. That way you can crank the volume without disturbing the rest of the house (or the neighbours).

And lastly, think about lighting. Ideally, you should be able to make the room very dark and limit ambient light. We suggest installing a door so you can block out sound and light from the rest of the home, and we also recommend incorporating block-out blinds, to make the space as dark and quiet as possible.
