The Best Way to Tidy and Style Your Home in Spring

September 2024 In DIY & Home Improvements

Spring is here so now is the perfect time to refresh your home! Make space for better weather and the spring colours 2024 has to offer.

This transitional season can be overlooked as a time to pack away winter in preparation for summer, but spring has its own flair and décor worth introducing to your home. Embrace the season’s grace with new décor and fabrics in soft patterns and pastel shades.

Dennis Family Homes Colour Showroom Manager, Tamara de Graaff and Colour Consultant, Jo-Anne Wilson recommend adorning your interiors with soft pastels – a classic spring trend that you can pair with organic shapes for a soothing and gentle aesthetic.

Spring Cleaning and Making Space

Before you start decorating for the new season, make room for your new décor. Starting at the front of your home and then working to the back, make three piles – keep, recycle, and donate – to declutter each wardrobe and closet. Donate or sell any unwanted goods. There are many charities across Melbourne accepting clothes and goods in reusable condition. On-selling is also easy on websites such as Facebook Marketplace and Freecycle.

Once you have cleaned out your closet and pantries, add shelving, drawers, baskets, organisers, trays, or hooks to help neatly arrange and store items. Next, spring clean your home from top to bottom, dusting and polishing all surfaces and décor. Don’t forget to vacuum any furniture covered with fabric as they can hide dust.

A Grand Floorplan

The Hastings 27 combines open-plan family living with ample room to entertain guests and spend time together. This grand floor plan is now on display with the Tempo facade, one of 10 facades available with the design.

Explore this home now at Berwick Waters Estate, 189, 191, &193 Honour Avenue, Clyde North VIC 3978.

Living and Dining

Whether you are tackling the living or dining room, or the many closets around your home, the same rules largely apply for a great spring clean. First, assess your room; consider what the room is used for and how best to use the space to meet your family’s needs in the future.

With two living rooms, the Hastings 27 has plenty of space to spread out and arrange the rooms to suit your lifestyle. The living room is the perfect size and location for an adult reception room. Furnish the space with a plush sofa and armchairs for a comfortable conversation setting. Incorporate the season’s tones and patterns with pillow covers in light colours and ultra-soft materials.

“Trends for this spring are earthy and warm with lots of beautiful linen and boucle textured fabrics,” says Jo-Anne. “We are seeing natural colours and textures throughout materials, finishes, and stylish décor pieces.”

Bright patterns add interest to a traditional palette. Pairing these small but bold features against neutral furniture adds another dimension to your décor. Alternatively, designate the living room as a children’s rumpus room and confine toys to this space to minimise time spent tidying at the end of the day.

Find the family and entertaining hub at the rear of the floorplan, filled with ample space to host family and friends. Allocate the family room at the rear of the home as a space to congregate and share a meal in the adjoining dining room as you discuss your day with family.

Kitchen and Pantry

The Hastings’ 27 open plan kitchen makes catering your party a breeze with a 2.5-metre long island. A large walk-in pantry provides perfect kitchen storage. It’s available in 3 options where you can add a dishwasher, stove, and sink for a preparation and cleaning station.

Tamara de Graaff recommends adding labels to clear storage tubs for a simple and effective storage solution. “Clear boxes and wire baskets can make a big difference to your kitchen pantry,” Tamara said. “Categorise and colour block to make an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.” “There is so much you can do with organising our robes and linens, all you need is some good storage boxes.”

Bedroom

The Hastings 27 floorplan includes a large master suite to the front of the home, a double vanity ensuite, and a large walk-in wardrobe. Separating the master suite from the popular family areas is a flexible living room. The three additional bedrooms sit beside the family hub. Each bedroom includes a wardrobe and shares a large bathroom with a tub and separate toilet.

To continue the sustainability trend in your home, Colour Consultant Jo-Anne Wilson recommends selecting fabrics made from cotton and linen. “These materials have a lower environmental impact as they are easy to maintain, durable, and recyclable,” she adds.

Experiment with quirky and whimsical artwork pieces that add character to your living or bedroom spaces and a splash of colour in a modern, temporary way. Add texture and warmth with wicker and rattan baskets, trays, and décor items. These natural materials infuse warmth and style in any room.

Study and Laundry

A shared study nook alongside the guest bedrooms is the perfect location to work from home or set aside as a homework space. Adding shelving will give you extra storage space that allows you to display your favourite décor items in a visually pleasing way. Indoor plants will also add bright colours and natural shapes. They can improve oxygen circulation even in smaller spaces.

Outdoors and Garden

Spring is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, particularly under the shade and weather protection of an alfresco covering. It’s time to strip the covers off your outdoor furniture and clean off any dust so it’s ready for use. An alfresco area adjoins the meals room in the Hastings 27 for additional entertaining and living space and is the perfect place to gather in warm weather.

A range of comfortable and practical furniture is available for your alfresco depending on the intended use. For example, select a pair of couches for a laidback arrangement or a dining table for a second meals area.

“Natural timbers with linen look fabrics for casual outdoor seating create a welcoming vibe to an outdoor space,” says Jo-Anne. “Pair your furniture with concrete and stone tables for an on-trend, sustainable pairing.”

Decorate your outdoor space to match the elegant spring aesthetic with hurricane drinking glasses and brightly coloured pillows and throws for cool nights. Adding decorations such as festoon or fairy lights to an outdoor entertainment area will magically transform the space with a touch of warmth and sophistication.

Try wrapping fairy lights around any trees or tall bushes for an eye-catching display or hang festoon lights across your patio covering to gently illuminate the retreat. Add a burst of colour to your alfresco with a selection of potted herbs. Only a few steps from your kitchen, this portable herb garden is practical for completing delicious meals. Select a range of colourful pots in seasonal tones for a stylish display.
